    BACKGROUND

    The Marth laboratory (http://bioinformatics.bc.edu/marthlab) at the Boston College Biology Department develops DNA sequence analysis software for data from high throughput, next-generation sequencing machines (e.g. Roche/454, Illumina/Solexa, AB/SOLiD, Helicos/Heliscope). Driven by collaborative data mining projects with genome centers and genomics laboratories we are building base calling programs, high-performance DNA read mapping algorithms; software for single-nucleotide polymorphism detection, structural variation discovery, and sequence data visualization. We are currently extending our algorithms for transcriptome sequencing, epigenetic analysis, and complete, whole-genome mutational profiling of model organisms. The laboratory is a key participant in the international 1000 Genomes Project, and in next-generation sequence analysis training courses.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    We are currently recruiting several postdoctoral fellows with expertise in bioinformatics and / or computing. Our primary interest is in computational scientists with a strong interest in biological / genomic research. Postdocs in the laboratory are expected to lead the development of high-performance sequence data analysis software, and to participate in collaborative analysis projects that drive tool development. They will work closely with data producers, experimental collaborators and colleagues at sequencing machine manufacturing companies.

    REQUIREMENTS

    A doctorate in science or engineering (e.g. biology, genetics, physics, mathematics, computer science, or electrical engineering) is required. Candidates with demonstrated bioinformatics software development expertise (especially C/C++) are preferred. We will also consider computational scientists from other fields (e.g. engineering, physics) who wish to transition into bioinformatics, as well as biologists who have working experience with Bioinformatics programming using e.g. PERL or PYTHON. Successful candidates will be joining researchers in a growing, vigorous computational biology program (http://bioinformatics.bc.edu) on the Boston College campus.
