    Opportunity: BIOINFORMATICS Scientist @ Montana State University--Bozeman, MT (US)

    BACKGROUND

    Montana State University in Bozeman, MT is recruiting a staff scientist to join the newly established Bioinformatics Core Facility. The candidate will work with scientists within the Thermal Biology Institute and NSF-EPSCoR program seeking to characterize microorganisms discovered in Yellowstone National Park and will also work with Montana INBRE and COBRE scientists studying biomedically important pathogens of man and animals. The Bioinformatics Scientist will be an essential member of the Bioinformatics Core team, and will have the support of a systems administrator, web designer/database developer, and functional genomics core coordinator.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Successful candidates must be comfortable working with both prokaryotic and eukaryotic biological systems, and be well-versed in open-source, web-based and command line bioinformatics applications.
    • Assist research groups with any of the following: sequence analysis, genome annotation, metabolic capacity, computational evolutionary biology, analysis of gene or protein expression, analysis regulation, protein structure or docking prediction, comparative genomics, or modeling biological systems.
    • Establish productive working relationships with the various user groups and aids in experimental designs that will involve computational approaches, assess the quality of input data, and actively assist researchers in the production of high quality results, and to provide feedback to improve protocols, methods and approaches.
    • Maintain current knowledge of computational biology and lead efforts where necessary to improve hardware and software capability for genomics and proteomics at MSU and to train users on the use of genome tools and provide guidelines for manual curation.
    • The Bioinformatic Scientist will configure (including scripting where necessary), run, and troubleshoot computational software and bioinformatic tools.

    REQUIREMENTS

    The candidate should have MS plus substantially successful professional IT experience in mathematics, biology, bioinformatics, chemistry, physics, engineering, computer science, statistics or related technical field *** OR *** a PhD in computational biology or closely related field. The candidate should have demonstrated mastery of UNIX/Linux and proficiency with some combination of Perl, Python, Java/J2EE, C, C++ and extensive knowledge of relational databases, schemas, and SQL queries.
