BACKGROUND

The Life Science and Biotechnology Institute (LSBI) at Mississippi State University invites applications for a Computational Biology Programmer & Analyst. The LSBI was established as a research institute to facilitate and enable MSU faculty and staff, as well as researchers statewide, to do state of the art “omics” research regardless of their biological discipline or experience.

The successful candidate will provide assessment and programming support for MSU faculty engaged in genomic biology research. This support could include, but would not be limited to: modeling using commercial programs; implementing and aiding in design of computational pipelines; developing, coding, maintaining, and testing of database systems and commercial application software; script development as required; writing materials and methods sections in manuscripts and grants. The ideal applicant will have work experience in bio-computing and peer-reviewed publications. Additional essential requirements are proven ability to: work efficiently; multitask; think both pragmatically and innovatively; work independently; work well with a wide variety of people (i.e., have exceptional people skills); work on teams & collaborative projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Knowledge of programming procedures and standards. Design, code and test application software, as well as modify existing software to reflect changes in system requirements or hardware configuration. Manage databases. Code efficiently adhering to established programming standards. Prepare and maintain quality documentation to manage program development and revisions. Prepare instructions and user documentation for users/operators. Modify programs to increase operating efficiency. Prepare test data and validate software for accuracy. Work with LSBI staff and PIs on projects as required. Maintain www site and servers. Supervise student worker.

REQUIREMENTS

A bachelor's degree in computer science, work experience in information systems and 2 years experience with relational databases and object oriented programming.

PREFERENCES

A Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related degree from an accredited institution, experience with bio-computing, relational databases and object oriented programming. Publication record. Position
