The Salk Institute is looking for a skilled, experienced and highly motivated programmer to play a key role in the development of its bioinformatics center. The position will report to the director of bioinformatics and be responsible for computational support in areas of sequence, gene expression and protein structure analysis for both the varied research areas of the Salk as well as the development of innovative databases and tools for the wider biomedical research community.
Position requires intelligence, skills, flexibility and hard work to support the research carried out at Salk. Duties will include:
- Development of tools to visualize and explore complex and extensive bioinformatics data from comparative genomics, expression profiling and high- and low-throughput data. Validation of tools with internal scientists and publication through a public website.
- Design and implementation of new analytical algorithms, methods and public web resources, with opportunity to contribute to open source efforts and scientific publications.
- Provide software and analysis leadership to interpretation of comparative genomics data, focused on understanding the fundamental relationships between function and evolutionary protein sequence conservation.
- Integration of diverse and heterogeneous data to facilitate data mining, statistical analysis, and interactive visualization.
- Development of cluster and grid computing, including collaboration with outside compute providers such as the San Diego supercomputing center, caBIG, and CalIT2.
REQUIREMENTS
- Strong proficiency in Java or C/C++ and in at least one scripting language, preferably Perl with BioPerl module experience
- Innovative web development, including Web 2.0 technologies, database interaction and visualization/user interaction skills
- Demonstrated ability in design of algorithms, workflows, data and database structures. Experience with workflow tools such as Taverna a plus.
- Fundamentals of database management with MySQL, and database programming with Perl DBI and/or PHP.
- Robust mathematical abilities for quantitative and statistical analysis of diverse data; data mining and statistics a major plus. Ability to implement algorithms from published literature.
- Experience with use and scripting of major bioinformatics packages for sequence analysis; experience in protein structure, gene expression, statistics and modeling packages desirable.
- Good working knowledge of Unix and Mac OS system administration, software installation and tuning, and management of clusters and grid computing.
- Ability to develop, tune, and manage production web servers for use by thousands of users per day.
- Ability to lead and work independently on technical aspects of research projects, while collaborating in small teams with other bioinformatics and experimental researchers.
BS or MS degree in computational or biological sciences, with at least three years of experience in bioinformatics software development and research. A strong understanding of the fundamentals of software development and some knowledge of molecular biology and genomics. Coursework or experience in statistics or data mining a strong plus.HOW TO APPLY
