BACKGROUND

U.S. Genomics is pioneering single molecule biology technologies for diagnostics and biodefense applications by combining advanced microfluidics, optical engineering, and novel labeling strategies. POSITION: Software Engineer/Scientist (Job Code: 2008-30SF)

RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will have considerable experience in software development and strong background in Physics, Applied Mathematics or Bioinformatics. The applicant will work within a team developing new data analysis algorithms and designing software applications based on these algorithms. The main focus will be on unsupervised learning applied to interpret DNA traces (images of fluorescently tagged DNA fragments) from U.S. Genomics’ GeneEngine technology. Less and more seasoned candidates will be considered, but extensive experience developing scientific or mathematical software under MS Windows is required.

REQUIREMENTS

Equivalent of at least 5 years of experience in scientific software application development with an emphasis on C#/C++ under MS Windows. M.S./B.S in Physics, Applied Mathematics, Bioinformatics or some other quantitative field with strong mathematical skills. Experience with data analysis and user interfaces.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Refine off-line pattern recognition algorithms and transition them from MATLAB to C#/C++ for rapid analysis of large DNA datasets. Collaborate with team members and software engineers to reorganize/advance existing software packages to facilitate more rapid and efficient data analysiS. Perform analysis of DNA data sets using existing USG software tools. Work with laboratory scientists to facilitate rapid experimental data analysis of DNA barcodes.

REQUIREMENTS

Strong ability to modify and develop C#/C++ GUI software under Visual Studio. Experience in algorithms development for data analysis. Very self-motivated with a desire to learn by working with an excellent team of scientists and software engineers.

PREFERENCES

Combinations of the following will be advantageous: Experience designing GUI’s for scientific and numerical applications. Experience with MATLAB. Experience with pattern recognition/unsupervised learning. Working knowledge of Applied Mathematics or Bioinformatics.
