    BACKGROUND

    The SRA International, Inc. Global Health Sector is an international health services organization working across government and commercial markets, composed of four Strategic Business Units. These units provide professional services in a variety of areas, including drug development/clinical research (CRO); international health development: designing and implementing public health and social programs in developing countries; domestic public health services: laboratory sciences, epidemiology, health communications, disease surveillance, peer review, and information technology.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Relevant experience includes, but is not limited to, supporting large information technology projects related to the individual’s subject matter expertise. Maintains knowledge in either functional domains (e.g., finance; personnel; acquisition; etc.); or technical disciplines (e.g., computer security; network engineering; etc.) with some experience. Prepares and delivers presentations to colleagues, subordinates, and government representatives. Assures the proper use of current or requested programming, and testing and documentation techniques. Produces and/or reviews technical documentation reflecting knowledge of technical areas. Documentation subjects include but are not limited to systems design, system architecture, feasibility studies, and system specifications.

    PROJECT OVERVIEW

    SRA’s customer’s initiative, led by the National Cancer Institute in collaboration with several world-class institutions, seeks to identify valid therapeutic targets so that new, more effective treatments can be developed for children with cancer. The TARGET Initiative is initially investigating the genome-related changes associated with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and neuroblastoma (NBL).

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Provide support for coordinating data submission from the program to NCI, including both the ALL group and the NBL group. Research involves genomic characterization by array-based methods; gene re-sequencing; and identification of targets by RNAi. The activities include creating and executing a Standard Operation Procedure for data submission, performing quality checks on submitted data, and preparing new data for public distribution to NCI or NIH data resources, which may include the development of simple GUIs.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Required Years of experience (min): 3-5.
    • Required: Masters Degree, PhD desired.
    • Required Degree May Be Waived In Lieu of Relevant Years of Work Experience.
    • Required Subject: Life Sciences or Computer Science.
    • Desired Subject: Bioinformatics, or mixture of Biology and CS degrees/experience.
    Experience and skills, especially attention to detail, are more important than degree.

    Required Skills:
    • Substantial practical experience in bioinformatics, including a basic knowledge of cancer research.
    • Relational database skills, including intermediate to advanced use of SQL for database programming, preferably on Oracle.
    • Experience with UML and DDL.
    • Programming skills in Perl or other scripting languages suitable for data cleaning and transformation manipulations; Java with experience with Spring framework and JBoss application server.
    • Some experience with basic UI design.
    • Extensive experience with microarray data (both gene expression and SNP/CNV data), with DNA sequencing, and with QA/QC of both data types.
    • Excellent communication skills that cross the Biology-IT boundary.
    • Extremely strong attention to detail, especially for documenting processes, data QA, and curation.
    • Ability to foster strong customer relationships and forge a consensus for procedures.
    Desired Skills:
    • Experience with caBIG caArray application and MAGE-TAB microarray data format.
    • Experience with Enterprise Architect
    • Experience with IntelliJ IDEA
    • Some experience with clinical data
