BACKGROUND

SAIC-Frederick, a wholly owned subsidiary of SAIC, is helping to speed the delivery of new technologies and treatments to patients with cancer and AIDS. SAIC-Frederick operates the laboratories at the National Cancer Institute at Frederick (NCI-Frederick).

SAIC-Frederick's staff of more than 1,700 scientific, technical, and support professionals conducts basic and applied research in cancer and AIDS, operates and manages the federal government's only vaccine manufacturing facilities (Vaccine Pilot Plant, Biopharmaceutical Development Program), runs the high-performance Advanced Biomedical Computing Center, and supports more than 300 clinical trials treating patients in the United States and around the world.

The company also manages public-private partnerships for the government and makes research and development technologies available on a limited, fee-for-service basis to other government agencies through the Economy Act and to academic institutions and corporate entities through a Work for Others program.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Participate in a diverse range of cancer biology and HIV AIDS research at the National Cancer Institute - Frederick by assisting scientists in the operation of confocal microscopes, other advanced fluorescence microscopes and image analysis software. Research applications include imaging of living cells, analysis of cell movement in 2D and 3D environments, analysis of molecular dynamics and interactions in living cells and quantification of individual cells in their natural tissue environment.

Duties include basic maintenance of instruments; interacting with microscope companies to accomplish repairs, updates and modifications; scheduling and monitoring microscope usage; providing instructions and assistance to microscope users in the operation of microscopes and accessing and operating image analysis software; providing advice about appropriate fluorescence labeling protocols, and assisting in the interpretation of scientific results.

The candidate will be expected to be significantly involved in maintaining a state of the art microscopy facility by keeping abreast of publications about the latest technologies, attending seminars and scientific/technical conferences, interacting with experts in the private and academic sectors and participating in the implementation of new technologies.

Activities may include introducing new fluorescence labeling procedures to the lab, as well as cell culture and performing molecular and cell biology protocols. The candidate will be expected to participate in the outreach efforts of the lab by assisting in the preparation of poster and oral presentations and manuscripts for publication, and representing the lab at internal NCI events. Duties include keeping the lab in compliance with Institutional, State and Federal regulations.

REQUIREMENTS

Possession of Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with course work in a field related to biomedicine, biophysics, microscopy or four (4) years related experience in lieu of degree. Foreign educated candidates who have completed part or all of their education outside of the United States must have their foreign education evaluated by an SAIC-approved accrediting organization to assure that it has met the equivalency of the qualifications of degree work in the United States. In addition to educational requirements, a minimum of two (2) years related biomedical experience. Keep accurate data on experiments and protocols; follow and apply protocols and procedures; outstanding interpersonal skills; should be capable of exercising independent judgement as position will involve planning experiments, evaluating, and interpreting results. This position is subject to obtaining a Public Trust Clearance.

PREFERENCES

Tissue culture, optical microscopy, operation of computer software, computer programming, fluorescence labeling, strong enthusiasm for multi-disciplinary research.
