    BACKGROUND

    Scientific Programmer, National Human Genome Research Institute, National Institutes of Health

    The Intramural Research Program of the National Human Genome Research Institute, National Institutes of Health (Bethesda, Maryland) is currently seeking a detail-oriented programmer to join its Bioinformatics and Scientific Programming Core.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with NHGRI research investigators performing a variety of large-scale genetic and genomic studies. These investigators employ cutting-edge technologies, such as next-generation sequencing methods, to advance our understanding of the basic mechanisms underlying human disease. The contributions of programmers within the Bioinformatics Core are often recognized by co-authorship on publishes scientific manuscripts.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Two years professional experience programming in Perl & CGI
    • Two years professional experience with relational database development
    • Solid knowledge of SQL and HTML
    • Demonstrated experience in developing and deploying applications on a UNIX and Linux platforms
    • Familiarity with public bioinformatics and genomic databases and tools (e.g., Entrez, UniGene, BLAST, UCSC Genome Browser, Ensembl, and Phred/Phrap/Consed)
    • Must be well-organized and experienced in software documentation
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with confident and cooperative service-oriented attitude
    Desired Skills & Experience:
    • Previous experience providing programming support on bioinformatics and genomic projects
    • Some experience with object-oriented programming
    • Some experience with high-performance (parallel) computing
    • The ability to be self motivated and work independently, with minimal supervision
    Education/Training:
    • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in the computer sciences, biology, bioinformatics, or related field
