RESPONSIBILITIES

The Vertebrate Genomics Team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) seeks a post-doctoral researcher to participate in the analysis of human genetic diversity. The programmer will have the opportunity to work with the dense genotyping data now being produced for large cohorts including those associated with diseases in the Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium and world-wide population diversity as exemplified by the 1000 Genomes project and the Human Genome Diversity Panel.

The Vertebrate Genomics Team at the EBI is an international hub of human variation data as its major projects include the 1000 Genomes data coordination centre, the European Genotype Archive, and the Ensembl project. The EBI is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus at Hinxton, near Cambridge, UK.

REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate will have a PhD in genetics, statistics, physics, mathematics or computer science with a demonstrated interest in population or statistical genetics. Applications are welcome from candidates with qualifications in computational and mathematical sciences seeking to move into the field of genomics. The post holder must be comfortable working in a UNIX/Linux environment and must be an accomplished programmer in a high level language such as C/C++. Experience with large compute clusters is helpful but not required. The successful candidate will be self motivated and capable of working both independently and within a closely interacting team of scientists in an international academic environment. (S)he should enjoy the challenges and excitement associated with working in a fast moving field. Further, excellent communication and interpersonal as well as very good English skills are essential.

TERMS

An initial contract of 2 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
