RESPONSIBILITIES

The Universal Protein Resource (UniProt) provides a central resource on protein information and a solid set of services and computational analysis of protein data. UniProt is produced by the UniProt Consortium - a collaboration between the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI), the Protein Information Resource (PIr) and the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB). The rapid growth in size and complexity of protein data presents big challenges in database infrastructure and developments.

The functional annotation of a large collection of predicted sequences in the protein sequence databases is essential to modern biology. The UniProt group at the EBI has developed an automatic annotation system based on computational methods and programmatic pipelines that provides initial automatic functional annotation to a large number of protein sequences in the UniProt Knowledgebase.

The post holder will join the automatic annotation project and will be expected to provide curation and quality control for the protein functional annotation framework, participate in the automatic annotation pipelines and the production of standard documents for the overall project.

REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate will hold a degree in Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics or related field and have a master degree or extensive experience in Bioinformatics. It is envisaged that the post holder will have a minimum of three years experience in Bioinformatics or related field. Familiarity with very large databases and proteome annotation will be considered an advantage. The candidate should also have experience of working with programming languages such as Java. The Bioinformatician will have the ability to work in a UNIX/Linux environment and knowledge of relational databases would be seen as a distinct advantage. The incumbent must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be capable of working within a team of biologists and programmers.

TERMS

An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
