    BACKGROUND

    GrassRoots Biotechnology is a new agricultural biotechnology company located in the RTP area of North Carolina. We will utilize a Systems Biology Approach to develop new traits for the biofuel, food and industrial markets. The company, formed in 2007, intends to commercialize innovations and expertise developed by Dr. Philip Benfey at Duke University. Dr. Benfey is one of the world leaders in the fields of plant cell development and genomics.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    GrassRoots seeks a highly motivated and qualified scientist to lead research efforts in the development and implementation of novel algorithms and tools to accelerate discovery and delivery of high value agronomic traits. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design and implementation of novel analysis tools leveraging our rapidly expanding resource of cell- and tissue-specific microarray expression data. He or she will also interface closely with other team members from various biological disciplines to validate algorithm predictions and to support their research objectives.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Education and skills:
    • Ph.D. (preferred) or M.S. (with equivalent work experience) in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, or related computational discipline;
    • Initiative in developing new technologies and approaches;
    • Ability to work independently, be detail-oriented and have excellent analytical skills;
    • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
    Documented expertise in the following areas required
    • Programming: Java, C/C++, Perl, or Python;
    • Relational database and SQL experience: MySQL or PostGres;
    • Microarray expression analysis
    • Sequence analysis and database searches;
    • Matlab or R programming
    Preference will be given to local candidates, but outstanding candidates will always be considered
