BACKGROUND

The Vertebrate Genomics Team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) seeks a highly motivated Web Programmer to join the Mouse Informatics Project. This project provides informatics support for a number of major mouse resources including the European Mouse Mutant Archive (EMMA) and the Internation Mouse Mutagenesis Consortium (EUCOMM, KOMP, NorCOMM). We have recently received funding to create the website for a new international consortium: CREATE. CREATE aims to provide a virtual repository of genetically modified mice expressing Cre recombinase under the control of cell-specific promoters/enhancers (CreZOO). This knowledge is currently dissipated amongst a number of world-wide resources so the CREATE website will be vital for researchers wishing to take full advantage of the products of the Mutagenesis Consortium.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Web Programmer will be responsible for creating this website after consultation with the partners of CREATE. As well as describing the goals of CREATE and forums for the management of the project, the site will also require a query interface to the CreZOO database. Integrated querying of CREATE with other distributed mouse resources will be set up using the BioMart data management system. The data will be displayed in a genomic context using the Distributed Annotation System (DAS) and Ensembl. Ensembl is one of the leaders in genome annotation and is currently the largest activity of the Vertebrate Genomics Team.

LOCALE

The EBI is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge, UK.

REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate will have significant experience of web programming including graphical user interfaces to relational databases. Applicants with experience in genetics or bioinformatics will have an advantage.

The post holder must be comfortable working in a UNIX/Linux environment. Proficiency in one or more web technologies (Perl/CGI, PHP, JavaScript, AJAX, J2EE (Tomcat, JSPs, Servlets), Spring framework), one or more database connectivity and technologies (DBI, JDBC, Hibernate) and relational databases (e.g. MySQL) is required.

The successful candidate will be self motivated and capable of working both independently and within a closely interacting team of scientists in an international academic environment.

(S)he should be comfortable with detail-orientated work, project deadlines, and the challenges and excitement associated with working in a fast moving field. Excellent communication, interpersonal as well as English skills are essential.

TERMS

An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
