    BACKGROUND

    The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.

    The Sanger Institute vertebrate resequencing informatics group analyses, processes, and delivers the sequence data and scientific findings of high-profile projects to the research community. These projects use cutting-edge sequencing technologies and require the development of novel algorithms and informatics solutions.

    We are seeking four skilled programmers/bioinformaticians to join the group.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Essential skills:
    • Degree in biology or computer science, plus three years experience
    • Experience in analysis and handling of large data sets.
    • Proven record of computer program design and implementation in a modern programming language (e.g. Perl, Java, C++ etc.)
    • High level of communication skills to be able to elicit complex requirements from, and convey complex information to, groups with different levels of technical knowledge
    • Ability to quickly adapt to new problems and ideas
    • Excellent problem-solving skills
    Ideal skills:
    • M.Sc. or PhD in biology or computer science
    • Previous experience with assembling new sequencing technology data
    • Experience with mapping/aligning sequence
    • Experience with running software on a compute farm or cluster
    • Web/CGI development experience

    The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genome sequencing and bioinformatics. The resequencing Informatics team has recently initiated new programmes in vertebrate re-sequencing and analysis using cutting edge sequencing technologies. These programmes include a project led by Richard Durbin on the characterisation of human variation by sequencing large numbers of individuals from around the world (http://www.1000genomes.org); and the sequencing and analysis of the genomes of mouse strains of fundamental importance to experimental genetics and human disease modelling, led by David Adams.
