RESPONSIBILITIES

An opening is available immediately for a bioinformatics researcher in a large and dynamic laboratory performing innovative research in virus detection and discovery at Columbia University. The candidate will be expected to contribute to multiple projects employing an interdisciplinary team of scientists and researchers. Shared responsibilities include administration of the Linux servers, developing sequence assembly and analysis methods for high-throughput pyro-sequencing data, maintaining data analysis pipelines for high density viral microarrays, a data sharing web portal, and maintenance of research databases containing diverse experimental data.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must have a good working knowledge of Perl/BioPerl and MySQL (experience in Linux administration and web development is strongly desirable.)

This position is strongly interdisciplinary and requires a bachelor’s degree in a biological science/bioinformatics/computer science and at least two years experience in a computer support role (a master’s degree in bioinformatics is strongly preferred).

Good communication skills are a must. The applicant will contribute to publications and research grants and communicate clearly with researchers. This position requires excellent organizational skills and the ability to develop relationships with collaborators to execute projects.

Minimum Qualifications for Grade:
Requires a bachelor’s degree in a biological science and two years experience in a computer support role.

Additional Position-Specific Minimum Qualifications:
The candidate must have a good working knowledge of the Linux operating system, Perl/BioPerl and MySQL. Excellent organizational and communication skills are a must.

Experience with sequence assembly and analysis, molecular phylogeny, primer and array design, and single-color microarray analysis will be considered especially favorable. Familiarity with statistical packages (e.g., SPSS, SAS, R) and web server development is also a plus.
