    BACKGROUND

At The J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI), teams of scientists, engineers, and bioinformatics professionals are making some of the most exciting scientific discoveries in the world. We recently uncovered more than six million new genes from organisms found in sea water, and are making steady progress in our quest to create synthetic organisms. These are just a few of the many research areas our teams are tackling as we seek to make a worldwide impact with our science.

    REQUIREMENTS

The successful candidate for the bioinformatics engineer position will have a degree in computer or biological science (BS, MS, PhD), and software programming experience. Proficiency in at least one of Java, C/C++, Perl, Python or equivalent is required. Candidates who can demonstrate solid understanding and experience in fundamentals of software engineering and software best practices will be given preference.

    PREFERENCES

Bioinformatics experience, especially in genomics, and expertise with XML and SQL are strongly preferred, and knowledge of statistics or algorithm development would be a major plus.
