    BACKGROUND

    The Salk Institute is currently seeking qualified applicants for a scientific programmer. The position is within the Gene Expression Laboratory and under the direction of Dr. Sam Pfaff, studies the embryonic development of the nervous system.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Research and lab responsibilities include:
    • Assist researchers in writing new data analysis algorithms of nerve recordings.
    • Modeling of neuronal circuit activity.
    • Manipulation of large data sets comprised of DNA sequences.
    • Assistance with quantification of nerve growth measured from microscope images.
    • Maintain the lab website.
    • Provide IT support for the computer systems in the lab.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Education: Bachelor's degree in computer sciences, bioinformatics, or cognitive sciences required.

    Experience: The candidate should have a strong understanding of mathematics and statistics, and knowledge of several types of computer programming languages. Position requires familiarity with Mac OSX and Windows. Must possess significant experience with C/C++, Java, and MATLAB, and familiarity with GUI creation. Understanding of parallel processing, multithreading, and distributed computing. Experience with signal processing and image processing, bioinformatics, GPU (i.e. Nvidia CUDA) highly desirable.

    Special Requirements: Candidate must be capable of working independently, posses a willingness to learn about the biology under investigation, and display good communication and interpersonal skills.

    Physical Requirements: Occasionally lifts and/or carries objects weighing up to 20 pounds. The lab environment might result in brief exposure to malodorous vapors, low dose radiation, and toxic chemicals. Position also includes long periods of standing and/or sitting.
