RESPONSIBILITIES
The Vertebrate Genomics Team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) is seeking a web developer to create and expand on existing data interfaces with a specific focus on large-scale resequencing and medical genomics displays. Initial projects will include the development of visualisation tools for the 1000 Genomes project and for data sets connecting human genome variation to observed phenotype or disease. The resulting visualisation tools are expected to work closely with the Ensembl Genome Browser either by direct integration into the existing Ensembl web code or by extensions to the Ensembl code base which implement specific features required to effectively present these datatypes.LOCALE
The projects of the Vertebrate Genomics Team at the EBI include the 1000 Genomes data coordination centre, the European Genotype Archive, and the Ensembl project. This environment provides access to an international collection of projects at the cutting edge of human variation research. The EBI is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus at Hinxton, near Cambridge, UK.REQUIREMENTS
A master’s degree or 3 years experience in bioinformatics, web technologies and visualisation is essential. The ideal applicant will have a proven track record of working on large-scale web applications, and understand the challenges posed by such systems, including scalability, response time, usability and multiple browser support.
The successful candidate will be able to show extensive web programming experience, including client side scripting capabilities, Perl programming and experience with relational databases. Experience with web-centric technologies such as CSS and AJAX would be highly beneficial, as would experience with the existing Ensembl code base.
The Web Developer will be self motivated and capable of working both independently and within a closely interacting team of scientists in an international academic environment. (S)he should enjoy the challenges and excitement associated with working in a fast moving field. Advanced English language, excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required for this post.TERMS
An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.HOW TO APPLY
