RESPONSIBILITIES

The Universal Protein Resource (UniProt) provides a central resource on protein sequences and functional annotation for biologists and for scientists active in functional proteomics and genomics research. The UniProt group at the EBI is looking to recruit a software engineer to support the software framework and web applications which provide the protein-related services portal for a large community of scientists.

The applicant will be responsible for the development, extension and maintenance of our web-based tools and databases in collaboration with other group members. (S)he will work closely with both our External Services group and our UniProt Consortium Members – the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB) and the Protein Information Resource (PIR), in relation to web applications management, testing and deployment.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants should have a background in computer science and/or bioinformatics and proven working experience of programming with J2EE (Tomcat, JSPs, Servlets), web technologies and web standards such as Http, REST, SOAP and Javascript AJAX and Tomcat. It would be extremely beneficial if the candidate had experience in bioinformatics and knowledge in Java open source technologies such as Spring, Lucene and Berkeley DBl. The Bioinformatician/Web Developer will have at least three years professional experience.

The post holder should be able to work independently and interact well within a team of software developers and biologists. The position requires the ability to work under time pressure and the dedication to communicate frequently with local as well as consortium partners in the project. Further, the successful candidate will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

TERMS

An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review.
