The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease. RESPONSIBILITIES
We are looking for two talented software developers to join the High Throughput Gene Targeting Team. The ideal candidate will be gathering requirements and liaising with senior project researchers to further develop the software in support of two large-scale international projects (EUCOMM and KOMP). Between them, these programs aim to create a library of ES cells that knocks out over half the mouse genome. We are pragmatic in the technologies we use, and we work closely with our lab's molecular biologists to make our software effective. Our software ranges from plate-tracking to sequence analysis to data marts, often with Ajax-driven web front ends. Some of our software is deployed here: http://www.sanger.ac.uk/htgt.TERMS
These appointments will be for a fixed-term until August 31st 2011.REQUIREMENTS
Essential Skills: You will be very competent in object-oriented Perl programming over relational databases, and have a good working knowledge of SQL.
Ideal Skills: A working knowledge of other OO languages and frameworks used in server-side development (e.g. Java, Spring) would be welcome. If you have experience with server-side frameworks (such as Catalyst and Template Toolkit), and / or Javascript toolkits (such as Prototype or JQuery), this would be an advantage. A qualification in Biological computing is not essential but an interest in the science and willingness to learn fast is key. The campus runs frequent courses to allow staff to augment their technical skills.ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The Sanger Institute's High Throughput Gene Targeting Team plays a central role in two established large-scale international projects: EUCOMM http://www.eucomm.org and KOMP http://www.knockoutmouse.org. Between them, these projects aim to knock out over half the mouse genome in the next few years. This library of knockouts will be an important future resource in the study of gene function in mammals. In addition to contributing to these international collaborations, this position will allow the post holder to collaborate with other scientists and bioinformaticians working on site.SALARY & COMPENSATION
