    BACKGROUND

The EBI is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community, with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation. The European Nucleotide Archive (ENA) is a core component of this mission, with responsbility of EMBL-Bank, the peer of GenBank and DDBJ, the European Read Archive, storing both long and short (next generation sequencing) reads and the associated submitted annotation and meta-data on this DNA sequence.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic, visionary leader for this team. The position requires both technical leadership in the running of a complex database and strategic scientific leadership in the general area of use of DNA information to the molecular biology community. The successful candidate will be expected to form external collaborations and raise funds via competitive peer review grants.

    REQUIREMENTS

We will consider either candidates who have already gained experience in a Team Leader (or similar) role OR have less direct management experience but can show clear vision and enthusiasm in this area. In the latter case we would provide mentoring, development and training to allow such a candidate to realise his/her potential in a leadership position.

    Qualifications and experience:
The ideal candidate holds a PhD in a biological or other scientific field and has more than 5 years direct experience in biology. Familiarity with bioinformatics, database technologies and genome-wide biological data analysis are further requirements. The post holder has profound experience in managing large and complex teams as well as complex international collaborations. The ability to provide overall technical leadership and to participate clearly in a large scale bioinformatics project is essential. Although a high level of programmatic proficiency is not required, the ability to manage a technical programme, programming and technical skills will be very beneficial. In addition, the post holder should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
