    BACKGROUND

    The Vanderbilt Center for Stem Cell Biology is home for the Coordinating Center for the Beta Cell Biology Consortium (BCBC). This is a major team science initiative established by National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) to facilitate interdisciplinary approaches to advance our understanding of pancreatic islet development and function with the long-term goal of developing a stem cell-based therapy for Type 1 Diabetes.
    Over the past few years the informatics in the BCBC Coordinating Center has developed a multipurpose website, betacell.org, now, serving as a platform for the efficient distribution of high quality and reliable information to hundreds of investigators and their staff.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    This position will provide support for users of the BCBC website and its related databases. The core responsibilities of the position include triage and escalation of issues, documentation and training, unit and usability testing, scientific data curation and content development.

    Duties:
    • Assist in data entry and curation,
    • Train scientists and their laboratory personnel on the proper use of BCBC web applications,
    • Assist in the development of written processes, guidelines and policies,
    • Work with users to resolve issues pertaining to their use of specific applications,
    • Test web applications prior and after release,
    • Identify and report operational issues to other team members,
    • Assist in establishing a “Help Desk” process for triage of support and development issues,
    • Assist in creating and organizing documentation, including:
    • - Developing and maintaining end-user written documentations as this software continues to evolve, and
    • - Develop end-user screen-capture training videos.

    REQUIREMENTS

    The candidate must have excellent communication and organization skills and be able to work within a team-based environment. Basic knowledge of Molecular Biology and/or Developmental Biology, and of the types of reagents used by investigators in these disciplines, is useful and preferred. Working knowledge of web applications, data standards and query languages is highly desirable, however, training will be provided. Technical writing experience or use of UNIX/Linux is also a plus.
    • Minimum education required: Bachelor degree in biology related field with basic knowledge of Molecular Biology, Developmental Biology, and/or Bioinformatics
    • Proficient in use of MS Office, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat

    COMPENSATION

    Salary is dependent upon education and experience.
