BACKGROUND

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Work within the internal R&D efforts to design and implement tools/applications related to automated data-mining and classification of large volumes of genomic data (e.g. gene expression)
• Provide and coordinate computational support for internal bioinformatics objectives as well as for ongoing customer-driven projects
• Participate in meetings for development of internal bioinformatics architecture, providing timely and effective feedback to the management team
• The position reports directly to the Chief Scientific Officer

REQUIREMENTS

• MS/PhD level applicants with a strong background in computer science, computational biology, bioinformatics, genomic sciences (or related fields) with 5-10 years of hands-on commercial experience (e.g. pharmaceutical, biotechnology sectors) are strongly encouraged
• Outstanding programmatic skills in Perl and C/C++ (Python, CORBA desirable) within a LINUX/UNIX environment with a strong working knowledge of CVS and Bugzilla
• Extensive knowledge of relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL) and database programming
• Experience with developing, using and managing scalable distributed software systems a plus
• Demonstrable track-record of inventive and/or resourceful approaches to software development of tools in the field of microbial genomics or other appropriate but related field(s); e.g. analysis of biochemical networks, flux-balance analysis, cheminformatics, EST clustering, SNP analysis
• Solid understanding of common computational biology tools (e.g. protein similarity search methods and tools, gene identification in microbial and/or eukaryotic organisms, gene expression analysis)
• The applicant must be a self-starter with strong time, team leadership and communication skills
