    BACKGROUND

The EBI develops and maintains many of the world’s key bioinformatics database and service resources. Amongst these are the European Nucleotide Archive, UniProt (the Universal Protein Resource) and InterPro, an integrated resource of protein families, domains and sites. Using a combination of these services, automatic pipelines are in operation that take coding gene predictions in nucleotide sequences through translation, functional prediction and mutual integration with other sequences, supporting a number of services offering a genome-centric view of the underlying data.

The emerging field of metagenomics (and the associated development of metatranscriptomics and metaproteomics) presents novel challenges in data modelling, interpretation and representation. We are therefore establishing a Metagenomics Portal (and underlying data processing pipeline) to provide a rich and appropriate interface for metagenomic data. We are seeking two new members of staff for the Protein and Nucleotide Database Group (PANDA) to develop this resource, one of these positions being for a Bioinformatician.

    PREFERENCES

Experience of working in a bioinformatics-centric environment is desirable. Familiarity with metagenomic data and analysis will be an advantage, but is not essential
