BACKGROUND
The Bioscience Division of EMD Chemicals is a leading supplier of high purity chemicals, research reagents and specialty products for laboratory applications. Products are used almost anywhere where analytics, R&D and production takes place. The core products are lab reagents, solvents, and specialty products supporting the entire drug development cycle - from research to production. Two well-known brands are Calbiochem® and Novagen®. The focus of the San Diego Bioscience Division will be Cellular Analysis, Molecular Biology, Recombinant Protein Expression, and Cloning and Expression.
EMD is a wholly owned subsidiary of Merck KGaA - a global pharmaceutical company. This division offers the stability of a large pharma company, with an entrepreneurial and innovative culture of a smaller division.
Drug discovery and screening: Innovative reagents for combinatorial chemistry, peptide synthesis, protein expression, immuno assays and many other key analytic reagents and solvents.
Drug development to manufacturing: Chromatography media and production enzymes for conventional synthetic and biotechnology recovery process operations. The high-performance brands of products are widely-used in downstream bioprocessing and are supported by worldwide accepted, comprehensive regulatory support files.
The company is a responsive and reliable partner for custom synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients. The cGMP production facilities for custom synthesis and services are equivalent to the facilities used for in-house pharmaceutical production.
Business growth will be driven by increased market penetration of existing product lines and introduction of innovative new products via internal development and an active technology acquisition program.RESPONSIBILITIES
This senior scientist will have the responsibility of mining databases and designing reagents within the Bioinformatics group at EMD Biosciences, a Division of EMD Chemicals, a global provider of life science research products. This individual will apply bioinformatics capabilities and technologies to provide scientific insight into biological systems.
Specifics:
- Lead identification of new product opportunities in the area of chemical entities (inhibitors, activators, substrates, etc)
- Responsible for cellular pathways
- Responsible for large scale experimental data analysis
- Analyze data and build hypotheses explaining results
- Coordinate and partner with business and operational teams for market relevance, product configuration and production
- Work on multiple projects
- Interact closely with Business Development and Product Management functions
- Present EMD technologies at national meetings and customer sites.
REQUIREMENTS
The successful candidate will have 2+ years of experience in a life science tool company or in a pharmaceutical or biotech company contributing to the bioinformatics efforts. Must have had experience in applying bioinformatics capabilities and technologies in providing scientific insight into biological systems. Large scale experimental data analysis is necessary along with the ability to analyze the data and building hypotheses explaining the results.
S/He must have strong science acumen with specific experience in:
- Biological pathways (developmental signal transduction and metabolic) and modes to activate or inactivate proteins within a given pathway
- Systems biology and an understanding of how biological pathways interconnect and overlap
