    Opportunity: Scientific Programmer w/ NIH/NHGRI @ Digicon Corporation--Bethesda, MD (US)

    The Intramural Research Program of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), National Institutes of Health (Bethesda, Maryland) is currently seeking a detail-oriented programmer to join its Bioinformatics and Scientific Programming Core.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work with NHGRI research investigators performing a variety of large-scale genetic and genomic studies. These investigators employ cutting-edge technologies, such as next-generation sequencing methods, to advance our understanding of the basic mechanisms underlying human disease. The contributions of programmers within the Bioinformatics Core are often recognized by co-authorship on published scientific manuscripts.

    REQUIREMENTS
    • Two years professional experience programming in Perl and CGI
    • Two years professional experience with relational database development
    • A solid, working knowledge of SQL and HTML
    • Demonstrated experience in developing and deploying applications on UNIX and Linux platforms
    • Familiarity with public bioinformatic and genomic databases and tools (e.g., Entrez, BLAST, the UCSC Genome Browser, Ensembl, and Phred/Phrap/Consed)
    • Must be well-organized and experienced with software documentation
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a confident and cooperative service-oriented attitude
    • Fluency in both written and spoken English
    Highly qualified candidates will possess:
    • Previous experience providing programming support for bioinformatic or genomic projects
    • Experience with object-oriented programming
    • Experience with high-performance (parallel) computing
    • The ability to be self-motivated and work independently, with minimal supervision
    Educational Requirements:
    • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in computer science, biology, bioinformatics, or a related field
    All candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S. for any employer and able to pass a background investigation (Level 5).
