BACKGROUND

The Sainsbury Laboratory (TSL) is a world leader in plant and microbial science that is dedicated to making fundamental discoveries in the science of plant-microbe interactions. TSL is evolving its scientific mission so that the Laboratory not only provides fundamental biological insights into plant-pathogen interactions, but also delivers novel, genomics-based solutions which will significantly reduce losses from major diseases of food crops, especially in developing countries. POSITION #1: Head of Bioinformatics (Ref HoL02/2009)

RESPONSIBILITIES

We are seeking a talented individual to lead bioinformatics activities at TSL and ensure that TSL continues to be equipped with the necessary expertise and infrastructure in bioinformatics to enable the Laboratory to maintain and develop its world-leading research activities. The post-holder will engage fully in the research interests of TSL Group Leaders and external collaborators, and will also pursue independent research within the portfolio of TSL Science.

REQUIREMENTS

The successful candidate will have advanced skills in a scripting language, preferably Perl and BioPerl, and experience with object-orientated programming/scripting is an advantage. A good working knowledge of statistics and statistical analysis software, plus experience of web-based genome browser software is also desirable, together with experience of working in a Unix/Linux command line environment. Proven line management experience and the ability to establish and develop key networks and collaborators are also important aspects of this role.

SALARY & COMPENSATION

Salary will be within the UEA ALC staff Grade 8, at between 37,651 and 47,666 GBP per annum and the appointment level will reflect the qualifications, skills, knowledge and achievements of the successful candidate.

TERMS

This full time position will be available for five years in the first instance from 1st October 2009.

POSITION #2: Two Bioinformatics Specialists (Ref HoL03/2009)

RESPONSIBILITIES

As part of the TSL expanded mission and increased activities in bioinformatics and high-throughput functional genomics, we are also seeking two Bioinformatics Specialists who will use their biological expertise to contribute to annotation and evolutionary analyses of host and pathogen genes involved in plant-microbe interactions. The candidates will join the team responsible for the analysis and annotation of phytopathogen and plant genomic sequence with an emphasis on genes encoding pathogen secreted proteins and plant innate immunity receptors. These two posts will report to the Head of Bioinformatics.

REQUIREMENTS

For these posts we are seeking individuals at any stage of their career but candidates with prior postdoctoral experience are particularly encouraged to apply. Applicants should have a background in molecular biology, computational biology, microbiology, plant biology or a related field. Experience with bioinformatics is preferred but not required.

SALARY & COMPENSATION

Salary will be within the UEA ALC staff Grade 7, at between 29,704 and 37,651 GBP per annum and the appointment level will reflect the qualifications, skills, knowledge and achievements of the successful candidates.

These are full time positions and will be available for two years in the first instance from 1st October 2009.
