BACKGROUND

The Pritchard lab at the University of Chicago/HHMI has an international reputation in computational population genetics and genomics. Much of our current work is focused on computational and experimental approaches to understanding human gene regulation.

This position is an excellent opportunity for a high-performing, ambitious programmer to contribute to an array of ongoing projects that involve data collection (next-gen sequencing and microarrays), genome-scale data analysis, and development of novel computational and statistical methods. Essentially all of our work involves extensive development of new computational tools.

The programmer will work with an outstanding set of students and postdocs from the Pritchard lab and from the labs of our close collaborators: the Molly Przeworski, Matthew Stephens, and Yoav Gilad labs. We expect that (perhaps after some initial training) the programmer will be able to contribute to the projects as an intellectual equal; his/her role will be fully recognized in the resulting scientific publications.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will be involved in a wide range of projects; the precise details would depend on skills and experience. For example, we envisage that the person would collaborate closely with particular members of the group on processing and analyzing data and developing computational tools for particular projects as the need arises. The programmer may also be involved in some needed upgrades of the very popular Structure software package (>3000 citations) that our lab developed.

REQUIREMENTS

Strong programming skills in languages such as C/C++, Java, and a scripting language; understanding of genetics; bioinformatics experience; ideally some statistics background and proficiency in R; willingness to work quickly but accurately in a fast-paced environment.

LOCALE

The group is based in the Department of Human Genetics at the University of Chicago, near to downtown Chicago and Lake Michigan.
