    BACKGROUND

    The Center for Public Heath Genomics at the University of Virginia (Charlottesville, VA) is looking for talented individuals to join our research staff. The Center has active research programs in the genetic and genomic aspects of complex diseases including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke, and cancer and will grow significantly in faculty and staff over the next 3-5 years.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The Genetics Biostatistician collaborates with research faculty members in the Center and has the opportunity to work on large scale projects at the cutting edge of human genetics and genomics research. Duties include disease susceptibility gene mapping by whole genome association and linkage, integration of microarray and expression analysis with genetic data, human genome annotation using data from next-gen sequencing projects, and analysis of data from functional genomics experiments.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Incumbent should have Master's or PhD-level experience in a field of statistics, machine learning, biostatistics, mathematics, computer science, and/or computational biology/bioinformatics, with an accompanying background in statistical or applied mathematical methods and algorithm development. The Center uses the R platform extensively for statistical analysis; significant, coursework-unrelated experience in R or S-plus is required.

    Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    • Ability to manage, analyze, summarize, and visualize complex integrated data.
    Required Computer Applications:
    • Experience with Bayesian methods, including tools such as WinBUGS, JAGS, and/or VIBES, is desirable.
    • Experience in complementary programming tools such as Linux/UNIX scripting, Perl or Python, C/C++, and/or Java is also highly desirable for this position.

    PREFERENCES

    Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    • Knowledge of contemporary genetics and/or genomics and analytical experience in relevant areas is preferred.
    • Experience in scientific computing, high-throughput computational statistical analysis, or previous use of computing grids or clusters.
    • Knowledge of contemporary genetics and/or genomics is preferred, but not essential for motivated individuals with appropriate depth of experience in methods and computational analysis.

    SALARY & COMPENSATION: $40,959 - $84,062
