BACKGROUND
The Sanger Institute has been leading the field of genomics for over 15 years. The Institute consists of a 1,000 people dedicated to solving some of the most virulent world- wide diseases.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
As a Principal Software Developer you will form part of a core team in Cambridge, UK. Your responsibilities will involve working with a team of highly immersed developers to develop high quality web based products used to create ground breaking scientific results. These products involve an open ended set of technologies, diverse platforms, complex algorithms and the latest application paradigms such as Ajax, SOA, RIA etc. The products are used by a widely diverse user base.
You will be responsible for delivering clean, testable and well-designed code. Along with a team of talented developers, you will be involved in the entire lifecycle of one or more projects, including strategy, vision, design, UX, coding, architecture, deployment etc. You will also be responsible for the end to end running of software projects and mentoring other developers.REQUIREMENTS
The successful candidate will have strong software development experience in developing web products using standard technologies. You will be a very strong developer with impressive problem solving skills, excellent design skills, sharp reasoning and a logical mindset. You will be passionate about automated testing, good design, performance optimisation and scalability.
You will have mastered multiple platforms and – whether it is SOAP vs REST or Ajax vs Flex or Postgres vs MySQL – you will be confident knowing which to use when and can argue the pros and cons of Strong typing versus ease of use OR browser compatibility issues versus lack of community support OR MVCC vrsus multiple backend storage engines etc.
You will have an excellent grasp of programming fundamentals including OOPs, Design Patterns, algorithms, data structures, networking etc. You will be flexible with respect to choice of technology, are relatively platform agnostic, and open to adopting the right technology for the task at hand. You will have exceptional oral and written communication skills and an interest in science. You must be able to deliver good software with a tailored user experience, at a rapid pace, and keep up with industry trends and practices.
Ruby on Rails, Java, SQL and Perl skills are essential.PREFERENCES
Experience using C/C++ and Java would be an advantage.SALARY & COMPENSATION
Salary range from £36,772 to £48,459 dependent on experience. The Institute has excellent purpose built facilities on the Genome Campus, Hinxton on the outskirts of Cambridge.
