    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The Sladek and Jiang Labs at the University of California at Riverside are seeking a bioinformatics researcher to investigate the regulation of gene expression by nuclear receptors via their DNA response elements. This is an exciting research opportunity to apply computational approaches to biological data and link that information to databases on human populations.

    The candidate will work closely with a molecular biologist who will be generating the biological data as well as another bioinformatics researcher. Direction will be provided by Prof.s Frances Sladek (Cell Biology), Tao Jiang (Computer Science) and Thomas Girke (Director of the UCR Bioinformatics Core). The position is funded by a 2-year NIH grant with the possibility of renewal if the project is a success.

    Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, DNA sequence analysis, database development, web interface development, microarray analysis, biological network analysis, and data integration.

    Since the research is on the cutting edge of transcription factor binding site research, there are opportunities to develop new computational approaches for motif finding, gene network analysis and data integration as well as to gain experience in genomic approaches to transcription regulation.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • A Ph.D., or Bachelor’s or Master’s degree with extensive research experience, in Life Sciences or Computer Sciences (with specialty in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology preferred)
    • Proficiency with Unix-based operating systems
    • Proficiency with database management systems such as MySql, PostgreSQL, etc.
    • Working knowledge of scripting languages such as PHP, Perl, Python, etc.
    • Programming and web programming experience
    • Ability to develop, refine and troubleshoot data analysis pipelines
    • Basic understanding of statistics (familiarity with R programming language and machine learning algorithms preferred)
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
    • Excellent organizational skills, versatility and ability to multitask
    • Creativity

    UC Riverside campus is located in the heart of Riverside County within 1-hour drive from the cities of Los Angeles, San Diego and Irvine.
