BACKGROUND

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The role will have overall responsibility for high-throughput analyses of genetics projects for a research theme in Genetics of intermediate traits in disease. A main responsibility will be to apply, and contribute to, novel methods for next-generation sequencing data calling and analysis. The successful candidate will be responsible for the calling and analysis of rare and common variants from sequence data, and will contribute to development of new sequence analysis methods.

He/she will write high quality, documented code to facilitate the rapid handling of such large-scale genetic datasets, including the retrieval, formatting, analysis and output of genetic data and the integration with information from public databases. Analysis of statistical associations with quantitative traits and disease endpoints will be performed in collaboration with statistical geneticists within the same team.

REQUIREMENTS

The successful candidate will have extensive experience in the field as evidenced by a PhD in a relevant subject (e.g. Bioinformatics, Computer science, Mathematics or Physics) and documented experience in handling of large datasets. He/she will have strong computer programming skills (e.g. Java, C++, Perl) in the UNIX environment.

This role will require frequent interaction with the Sanger Human Genetics teams as part of the ongoing expansion of its statistical genetics capacity and with the aim to facilitate integration with internal and external data sources, so good communication skills are essential.

PREFERENCES

Database development skills in Oracle or MySQL are highly desirable.

TERMS

Postdoctoral Fellows are typically in their first or second postdoctoral position as part of a period of early career research training. The post is a three year fixed-term contract.

SALARY & COMPENSATION

Salary range £28000 to £34433 dependent on experience.
