    BACKGROUND

    The newly founded MPI for Biology of Ageing (MPI-BALT) offers a vibrant research atmosphere. So far, it has ~50 full-time researchers dedicated to understanding the fundamental molecular mechanisms of ageing, using model organisms such as the fruit fly (Partridge lab), worm (Antebi lab), and mouse (Larsson lab). The MPI-BALT is currently in its build-up phase and will be the core of an excellence cluster in Cologne to study ageing in basic, as well as medical sciences. You will have the opportunity to be part of the start-up phase of an exciting new research place.

    This position offers you the possibility to closely collaborate with top researchers in molecular biology, as well as develop independent lines of research. Check out our joint publications in molecular biological research.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • The MPI-BALT seeks a social, intelligent, organized, friendly, and energetic person who will work within the Bioinformatics team (Habermann lab).
    • Education Level: Master Degree or PhD
    • We need a person who has a sound understanding and quick comprehension of biological problems.
    • He/she has furthermore a strong interest in combining his/her bioinformatics skills with top-level basic research in molecular biology.
    • Relevant Work Experience: Biology, Bioinformatics
    • Experience in applied Bioinformatics ideally includes:
    • - Genome analysis & Gene Prediction
    • - Sequence Analysis and Functional Prediction of Proteins
    • - Phylogenetic Analysis
    • - Structural Biology and Analysis
    • - Programming experience (Python or Perl)

    PREFERENCES

    • Experience with Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data is of advantage.

    LOCALE

    The MPI-BALT is located in Cologne, Germany's oldest city with more than 2000 years of history. The city owns innumerable cultural and historical treasures, world-famous museums and an active art scene. Life in Cologne is uncomplicated and vivacious. Due to Cologne's proximity to the German/Belgian/Dutch border Paris, Amsterdam and Brussels are just a few hours away.

    TERMS

    Status: Full-time Employee. This position is available from the beginning of 2010 and the starting date is flexible based on your availability. The employment contract is based on contracts for the civil service (TVöD) according to experience.
