BACKGROUND
The Jackson Laboratory currently hosts 38 faculty, is an NCI designated Cancer Center, and is an NIGMS Systems Biology Center of Excellence. The lab is consistently ranked as one of the best places to work in America by The Scientist magazine.RESPONSIBILITIES
There is an opening for a Scientific Software Engineer II/III at The Jackson Laboratory in the Hibbs laboratory for Computational Biology and Functional Genomics. In this position you will design, develop, support, and maintain scientific software systems including large scale data analysis methods and visualization interfaces. The incumbent will work within a well-defined software development process and will be directly involved in all phases of the software development life cycle.REQUIREMENTS
- Required technical skills include proficiency with many of the following: Java, C/C++, HTML, Perl, Ruby, Rails, GWT, OpenGL, R, shell scripting, and Linux.
- The successful candidate is detail oriented, has excellent interpersonal and communication skills, is a skilled technical writer, works comfortably within a well-defined software development process, is a successful contributor in a team environment and eventually has the ability to provide team leadership in design and development of complex software systems.
- Candidates should have a strong interest in the ongoing development of their technical, and interpersonal skill sets as well as their scientific knowledge.
- The successful candidate will have at least a BS degree in computer or information science and at least 3 years or more relevant software engineering experience.
- Candidates should have experience with parallel processing and the use of computer clusters.
PREFERENCES
- Experience with graphical user interfaces, including web programming, is preferable.
- Prior knowledge of genetics or molecular biology is recommended, but not required.
