RESPONSIBILITIES
- Undertaking research projects in collaboration with academic supervisors, making innovative and significant contributions pertaining to computational genome annotation and various applied bioinformatics in a molecular biology research laboratory
- Undertaking comprehensive analysis of transport proteins
- Performing computational comparative studies of sequenced genomes
- Extracting and integrating biological information and data
- Performing protein and nucleotide sequence analysis
- Determining the phylogenetic analyses of sequences to establish family/super family relationships within transport classification system using tools such as BLAST, MSA, GCG and EMBOSS packages, etc.
- Preparing reports and manuscripts on the results
- Extensive scientific programming and database development and maintenance
- Redesigning, implementing and administering the Transport Classification Database (TCDB) in collaboration with computer scientists and academic advisors
- Instructing and assisting undergraduate students with projects including troubleshooting and problem solving in computational work
REQUIREMENTS
- Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends as needed to support the needs of research
- Must be willing to work in the presence of chemicals and other hazardous materials.
- Demonstrate strong theoretical knowledge and independent experimental ability to perform applied bioinformatics in a molecular biology research laboratory or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Demonstrate detailed conceptual/theoretical including independent experimental ability experience in genome annotation and computational biology related projects
- Demonstrated writing ability in preparing and editing papers, manuscripts, grants and lab data. Demonstrated ability to maintain effective record keeping
- Proven ability to independently participate in the execution of research projects to develop scientific programs using Java, JavaScript, Perl, PHP, MySQL in UNIX environment, XPATH, SAX, DOM, HTML
- Experience with the design, development and maintenance of databases used for biological data storage and analysis in a molecular biology research environment, such as a Transport Classification Database
- Theoretical knowledge and ability to perform phylogenetic analyses of sequences using MSA (ClustalX/W, T-coffee, KALIGN) along with BEAST, Paup, GCG and EMBOSS package, HMMER2 and other software such as, IC (Inter-Compare), AveHAS, SuperTree, etc.
- Experience with protein and nucleotide sequence analysis, including motif/domain, using programs such as MEME/MAST, HMMER, Pfam, SMART, CDD and DCART search
- Proficiency with computer hardware and software including different operating system environments (such as Mac, Windows and UNIX) with the willingness and ability to update skills and knowledge as needed.
