RESPONSIBILITIES
Position Summary: The Advanced Applications Specialist will work as a part of the Data Administration Team in the Department of Information Technology with primary responsibly for a project in the Charles R. Bronfman Institute for Personalized Medicine. The group is building Genome databases to support clinical and translational.
The Advanced Application Specialist will focus on the specific software requirements of translational and genomic research, and will be the primary technical support person for installation and support of a set of Biobanking and Genomic applications and related specialized data stores, indexes, and Web-based APIs. This involves working as part of a team that consists of people with a variety of backgrounds, including other software developers and Ph.D.-level biologists, to improve and expand web applications widely used by the biomedical research community.
The successful candidate must be able to learn and work independently within this larger collaborative group. The position requires hands-on development with Java, Web standards, UNIX server environment, Oracle and scripting languages that are used to support and troubleshoot these database and scientific applications. Participation in a variety of forums and committees will be required to enhance collaboration and provide forward-leaning solutions.
Duties include but are not limited to defining and analyzing client requirements, architecting, and developing custom applications, configuring and installing open source and proprietary applications, document creation, profiling recommendations, impact analysis and possible technology approaches.
Key Accountabilities:
- Design systems and programs to meet highly complex research requirements
- Work with biostatisticians to turn proof-of-principal algorithms into robust code
- Work with molecular biologists to optimize novel assays
- Prepare detailed specifications from which programs are developed and coded
- Code, test, debug, implement, and document complex programs
- Develop comprehensive test plans to verify logic of new or modified programs
- Create appropriate documentation of work assignments such as design documents, written specifications, program code, and technical documentation
- Write robust code to analyze large numerical datasets from biotechnology assays
- Work with biostatisticians to turn proof-of-principal algorithms into robust code
- Work with molecular biologists to optimize novel assays
- Provide molecular biologists code for daily use
- Optimize code for use on multi-core and Unix/Linux/Mac clusters
- Work with databases to provide access to large genomic datasets
- Support project personnel in resolving fairly complex program problems
- Work with client and management to resolve issues and validate programming requirements within their areas of responsibility
- Provide technical advice on programming tools and methodologies
- Conduct quality assurance activities such as peer reviews
- May serve as technical project lead; provide leadership and work guidance to less experienced personnel
REQUIREMENTS
- Education Requirement: Bachelor’s degree in computer science or other discipline related to the primary responsibilities of the job
- Minimum of five (5) years experience developing applications in Java/C++/Oracle/MySQL and Unix
- Minimum of two (2) years experience in a large clinical research / teaching institution with strong math/statistical/bioinformatics background
- Demonstrated scientific programming excellence
- Experience creating algorithms for analysis of large datasets, with particular focus on biotechnology datasets
- Knowledge of current high-throughput genomics methods is highly desirable.
- Ability to program in R, Matlab, or other statistical language
- Proven understanding of a formal Software Development Life Cycle
- Development on Linux/Unix/Mac and Windows
- Outstanding organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
- Attention to detail, customer-service orientation, and creativity in problem solving
