    RESPONSIBILITIES

    50%: Developing novel data mining methods for drug discovery: Activities will entail diverse research applications across the expanse of bioinformatics and computational biology, with primary prospective foci on developing datamining methods; tool development in high throughput sequence analysis; microarray and miRNA analysis; and algorithmic approaches to understanding transcriptional and translational control mechanisms.

    40%: Develop and maintain sophisticated data management schemes in support of data intensive biological research efforts: Duties include developing and maintaining software, databases, and scripts enabling facile storage, retrieval and dissemination of biological data and -omics datasets. Additional interests lie in the areas of molecular interaction and signaling networks as well as integration of data across disparate data sources.

    10%: Mentor GRA students in data mining and data management projects: The postdoc will be expected to provide guidance to graduate students involved in complementary bioinformatics research projects.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, or closely related discipline
    • At least two years experience in programming languages (i.e. C,C++, Java, J2EE, PERL, R )
    • Experience in developing databases using Oracle, MySQL, or similar
    • Established track record of bioinformatics or computational biology research as shown by at least two peer-reviewed publications in these fields

    PREFERENCES

    • Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills
    • Evidence of ability to work independently with attention to detail
    • Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a team-based environment
    • Experience in collaborating with experimental biology researchers, especially in the areas of biomarker detection, metabolomics, proteomics, and/or chemical biology
    • Web and database development skills
    • Established track record of applying statistical and/or data mining techniques to research problems

    TERMS

    Full-time, 40 hours per week. This is a one-year appointment with the possibility of extension.

    $32,000-35,000 plus benefits
