    BACKGROUND

    The University of the Witwatersrand is a leading South African research university. We have leading researchers in molecular biology and genetics and good computing and networking infrastructure. We have novel data sets and are working on exciting scientific problems.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Wits University Bioinformatics is recruiting postdoctoral scientists to work on disease related genomics projects in the areas of gene expression profiling, comparative genomics, and genome (gene) annotation. Current projects include plant (Cassava & Arabidopsis) genome annotation, and gene expression profiling of plant-viral host interactions, gene expression profiling of leukaemia and lymphoma of African populations, gene expression analysis of mouse T cell development; parallel algorithms for clustering and assembly.

    Applicants are invited to join this stimulating and collaborative research environment, with novel data sets awaiting interpretation.

    Responsibilities include research, mentoring of postgraduate students.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • PhD in bioinformatics or a related discipline
    • Prior experience in the relevant areas is also required.

    PREFERENCES

    • Experience of participating effectively as part of a research team would be a great advantage.

    TERMS

    One year in the first place, but renewable on good progress subject to funding. Our desire would be appoint someone who would like to spend two years with us but we shall consider people who can only make one year commitment.

    SALARY & COMPENSATION

    Dependent on qualifications and experience according to University scales. The basic fellowship is tax-free and Wits Bioinformatics can supplement this with a stipend
