BACKGROUND
The Developmental Therapeutics Program's primary emphasis is on drug discovery and characterization, identification of new therapeutic molecular targets and participation in the evaluation of samples and results from animal models with a goal of identifying drugs with potential therapeutic value.RESPONSIBILITIES
We are seeking a Scientist with expertise in Next Generation Sequencing to independently develop techniques and procedures to perform high-throughput, deep sequencing in order to enhance our understanding of immunopathological conditions associated with infections disease.
You will interact with investigators from SAIC-Frederick, Inc and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, NIH, in the design and interpretation of experiments involving all applications of the 454 FLX Titanium Sequencer including chromatin immunoprecipitation, epigenetic studies, pathogen sequencing from human tissue, RNA expression profiling, and targeted-genome sequencing.
You will work closely with our bioinformatics group to establish a comprehensive sequence analysis pipeline, to present sequence analysis data to collaborators and to link deep sequencing results to in-house microarray expression and genotyping results and clinical data.
A high-end IT infrastructure will be provided with the idea that the scientist will work closely with IT professionals to best integrate the computation systems.
You will be expected to independently investigate problems and develop techniques and procedures which may be difficult to solve and thus require the sophistication, creativity, and judgment of an established and highly competent scientist.
The duties of the position involve the evaluation of complex problems in Next Generation Sequencing, thus requiring both conventional or novel approaches. Substantial freedom will be allowed to identify the best approach for studying the problem area.
You will be expected to provide guidance to lower level research staff.
Contributions are identified through independent authoring or co-authoring publications in scientific journals and by presentations at national and international meetings.
Hands-on wet bench research will be required to be performed and will supervise the production and testing of established procedures. The work may involve the use of potentially hazardous chemical, biological, or radiological materials or may be located in areas where such materials are used. The work may require the use of personal protective equipment and adherence to strict safety protocols.REQUIREMENTS
- Doctoral degree from an accredited college or university appropriate to biomedical research, or eight (8) years related experience in lieu of degree. Foreign educated candidates who have completed part or all of their education outside of the United States must have their foreign education evaluated by an SAIC-approved accrediting organization to assure that it has met the equivalency of the qualifications of degree work in the United States.
- Candidates should have had two or more years of competent, innovative research experience beyond doctoral training in Next Generation Sequencing, preferably associated with the 454 Sequencer.
- Proficiency in performing and developing a vast array of molecular and cellular assays, tests or production methods is essential.
- A strong background in bioinformatics, especially methods pertaining to sequence analyses and high-throughput, genome-scale analyses is required.
- Strong interpersonal skills will be needed to work closely with collaborators, bioinformatic teams, and laboratory personnel.
- An individual at this level is expected to have made contributions by independently producing research work in peer-reviewed scientific journals and at professional scientific meetings in order to demonstrate scientific originality, soundness, and value.
- In lieu of publications, successful completion of production processes must be demonstrated.
