    BACKGROUND

    The Oxford Parkinson's Disease Centre (OPDC; http://opdc.medsci.ac.uk) is a new grouping of scientists and clinicians with a unique combination of skills working in the interdisciplinary research environment at Oxford. The Centre brings together international leading scientists studying the genetics and neuropathology of PD, the generation and analysis of cell and animal models, and the wiring of neuronal circuitry, with leading clinical experts in the diagnosis and treatment of PD. The Centre includes the UK’s top-ranked Biomedical Sciences Department (Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics), two world-leading Medical Research Council Units, and an external scientific advisory board of international experts on PD. Together, we will create a world-class research centre to understand the earliest pathways to pathology in PD and create new, more relevant animal models of disease with a view towards developing molecular therapies to halt the disease progression at the earliest stages.

    The genetics underlying Parkinson’s disease (PD) remain largely unknown. Our approach to understanding PD will be to exploit newly-developed computational methods with the vast population data sets from patient and control individuals that are being generated using the newest genomic technologies. Together we will seek to accurately predict pathways, genes and variants that underlie the etiology of PD. The successful candidate will be joining a vibrant computational genomics group with considerable experience in diverse genomic analyses. S/he will work to identify PD candidate genes that will subsequently be investigated in partnership with OPDC members.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Genomics is a very rapidly moving field and the successful candidate will harness emerging functional genomics resources to complement existing knowledge. In particular, s/he will employ functional network information, such as shared biological pathways or phenotypes, to identify candidate genes. The successful candidate will analyse data generated by OPDC partner groups, including Next Generation Sequencing data, in order to identify likely-causative variants from a large cohort of people with Parkinson’s disease.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Applicants must have a doctorate in a relevant area of research, such as computational biology, bioinformatics, statistical genetics or comparative genomics.
    • Applicants should be able to script competently, and have experience of current bioinformatics tools, resources, and method development.
    • Evidence of leading and managing successful research projects will also be required.

    SALARY & COMPENSATION

    Five year fixed term post on Grade 7: Salary 28,839–35,469 GBP pa (with discretionary points to 38,757 GBP)
