    BACKGROUND

    The Global Health and Biotechnology Center (GHBC) provides state-of-the-art research technology to Seattle BioMed’s investigators by merging core equipment and technical expertise common to multiple research programs. Our goal is to produce scientific data more rapidly, more reliably and more cost-effectively by developing SBRI’s existing and future resources and providing expert service and training to all users. Core technologies at SBRI include: Bioinformatics, Mosquito Production, DNA Sequencing, Flow Cytometry, Imaging, Protein Production and Proteomics.

    The Bioinformatics Core provides Seattle BioMed researchers access to state-of-the-art infrastructure (hardware and software) and personnel in order to track, store, manipulate, and analyze the biological data needed for scientific testing and discovery. Our team is actively recruiting for a full-time Bioinformatics Systems Programmer.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    We are looking for a bioinformatician to serve as the expert statistician within the team. The primary responsibility of this position is to provide a framework for the statistical analysis of genomics data from a variety of projects within the institute and as part of world-wide collaborations. On-going projects cover a broad spectrum of topics, from the analysis of whole genomes to target selection for structural genomics.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Experience in the statistical analysis of large genomic datasets is essential.
    • Solid understanding of statistical analysis techniques associated with whole genome sequences, microarray data or sequencing
    • Experience with statistical packages (e.g. R, Stata, SAS, Matlab)
    • Good programming skills in at least one OO language: (e.g. Python, Ruby, Java, C#)

    PREFERENCES

    • Familiarity with systems biology data and tool integration platforms is highly desirable.
    • An interest in data management systems, data mining and/or semantic web would be of advantage.
    • Knowledge of public biological sequence databases (e.g. NCBI, Uniprot, Geo)
    • Experience with a mainstream RDBMS: (e.g. PostgreSQL, Oracle, MySQL or SQL Server)
    The successful candidate will join a team of bioinformaticians and software engineers. We value highly the ability to react quickly to evolving requirements and implement creative solutions using existing open-source software.
