An accomplished and highly motivated candidate with diverse skills is sought to to fill a unique postdoctoral associate position at Baylor College of Medicine.
The Bioinformatics Research Laboratory (BRL) http://www.brl.bcm.tmc.edu, directed by Prof. Aleksandar Milosavljevic, and the independent, fully funded laboratory of Dr. Kjersti Aagaard-Tillery (NIH New Innovator Award recipient) has an immediate opening for a jointly employed, highly motivated postdoctoral researcher in the areas of genomics, epigenomics and bioinformatics and biostatistics. BRL functions as the Epigenomic Data Analysis and Coordination Center (EDACC) for the recently launched NIH Epigenomics Roadmap Initiative (http://nihroadmap.nih.gov/epigenomics/fundedresearch.asp). Dr. Aagaard engages in genomics and epigenomics translational research initiatives in perinatal medicine. Dr. Aagaard and Dr. Milosavljevic have a long-standing history of collaboration and joint employment of bioinformatics post-doctoral candidates.
The researcher will participate in both programming to support data processing, coordination, and analysis with commercial and custom high-throughput array and sequencing platforms and in higher-level modeling and analysis projects aimed at understanding epigenome biology. The candidate must have strong analytical and biostatistical skills, at least modest programming experience, and a record of accomplishment in high-throughput analysis of genomic, epigenomic, or gene expression data using commercial platforms.
This position represents an exciting opportunity in a unique collaborative setting to contribute to the NIH Epigenomics Roadmap Initiative and gain translational research experience working in collaboration with leading laboratories in the field. The successful candidate will be expected to play multiple roles within the project. One role is data processing to support generation of reference primate epigenomes and coordination of data flow. This will involve data modeling and implementation of data processing pipelines using a programming language such as Ruby and the Genboree Application Programming Interface http://www.genboree.org.
The second role is the design and implementation of integrated data analyses aimed at understanding epigenome biology in primate systems. This will employ commercial or customized platforms (Affymetrix, Illumina, Agilent) for high-throughput genomics, epigenomics, and transcriptomics. The candidate will work with both laboratories to gain fundamental skills in applying biostatistics and bioinformatics to next-generation analyses in translational biology.
REQUIREMENTS:
- The candidate must have strong background in bioinformatics, biostatistics and genetics/genomics and analytical skills demonstrated by a publication record.
- At least a modest programming experience in creating non-trivial programs in a UNIX/Linux environment using programming languages such as Perl, Python, or Ruby is required.
- Familiarity and a publication record with commercial platforms in any avenue of omics (for example, Affymetrix or Illumina whole genome methylation and gene expression arrays) is similarly required.
- The candidate should have a record of accomplishment in high-throughput genomic analysis and basic biostatistics in application as above.
- In addition, the candidate must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be capable of working within a team of biologists and programmers. Due to the nature of the position, the candidate must have excellent written and verbal skills in English.
