    BACKGROUND

    The Norris Medical Library, located on the University of Southern California Health Sciences Campus, adjoining the LAC+USC Healthcare Network, the Zilkha Neurogenetic Institute, and the Institute for Genetic Medicine, is four miles from downtown Los Angeles and seven miles from the University Park Campus. The library contains 176,000 volumes and receives 2,568 current electronic journals and 500 current print journals. Users include medical, pharmacy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy students, graduate students in the biomedical and biological sciences, 1,480 full-time faculty, and a large number of other health professionals.     RESPONSIBILITIES

    The Norris Medical Library of the University of Southern California is seeking a creative, enthusiastic, and service-oriented individual to serve as a Bioinformatics Specialist. Reporting to the Senior Bioinformatics Coordinator, the Bioinformatics Specialist provides educational and consulting support for faculty, postdoctoral fellows, students, and researchers in the USC scientific community.

    Duties:
    • Develop and conduct broad-based educational programs related to the proper selection and use of bioinformatics resources and databases.
    • Assist in the selection and negotiation of site licensing of commercial products.
    • Provide consulting services and training for faculty, students, departments, and research teams regarding the effective application of bioinformatics tools for specific research problems or for assisting researchers in visualizing, analyzing, manipulating, and/or interpreting molecular data.
    • Maintain a current awareness of newly developed databases and resources, and develop innovative approaches to disseminating this information.
    • Update and maintain a website to promote and support the use of available bioinformatics resources and keep researchers abreast of new developments in bioinformatics and biocomputing.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • A Master’s degree in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, computational biology or an equivalent field with at least three years of relevant experience
    • Solid training in biostatistics
    • Extensive familiarity with key molecular, genomic and proteomic databases, as well as with a variety of software tools for manipulation and analyses of this data
    • Demonstrated initiative
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

    PREFERENCES

    • Ph.D.
    • Experience in classroom teaching and/or development of training materials
    • Extensive working knowledge of key bioinformatics software (e.g. Bioconductor) used in microarray and other high-throughput molecular data analysis.
    • Familiarity with biocomputational programming and knowledge of R, Perl and the Linux operating system

    SALARY & COMPENSATION

    Starting salary depends on qualifications and experience, minimum starting salary is $65,000. This position is a continuing-appointment track, the USC librarian’s equivalent to tenure. Potential joint appointment in the Keck School of Medicine’s Department of Preventive Medicine, Division of Bioinformatics.
