    BACKGROUND

    The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.

    As part of the Sanger Pathogen Genetics Programme, the team lead by Gordon Dougan is leveraging revolutionary advances in genome science to understand the role of natural genetic variation bacterial pathogenesis. This work involves large-scale clinical epidemiology and cutting-edge sequencing technology, combined with novel and user-friendly web applications to manage, analyze and share the data.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    We have a unique opportunity for an experienced programmer to develop and extend current applications for analysis, display and sharing of genome variation and population genetic data applied to the analysis of bacterial genome diversity in natural populations.

    This work is highly collaborative and the post-holder will work closely with biologists, statistical geneticists and programmers in the Pathogens Programme, and with partners within and beyond the Sanger Institute to establish highly specified tools for genome variation data analysis and display. As such, strong communication skills and willingness to work collaboratively in a team setting are essential. The post offers considerable scope for initiative, although some guided development of new/existing applications to fit into existing systems will be required.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • The ideal candidate would have a degree in biological or computer science.
    • Proven ability to apply object oriented programming productively in a UNIX/LINUX environment
    • Significant experience programming in Java and HTML/JavaScript
    • Strong analytical and communication skills are also essential.

    PREFERENCES

    • Experience in bacterial genetics, phylogeny or evolution would be an asset but are not essential.

    TERMS

    This position is fixed-term for 3 years.

    SALARY & COMPENSATION

    Salary range is 27,316 to 37,690 GBP pa dependent on experience.
