    BACKGROUND

    THE CENTENARY INSTITUTE is a centre of excellence in medical research affiliated with the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the University of Sydney located at Camperdown.

    The Centenary Institute Bioinformatics Department is newly established in 2010. We aim to provide specialist bioinformatics services to a whole range of researchers both within the Institute and to establish collaborations with the research precinct including the University of Sydney. Our services are needed to meet an identified immediate need for a bioinformatics service provider to address questions raised by a broad range of medical and biological research projects.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    We are currently seeking a proactive and results-driven Statistical Bioinformatics Specialist to join our team. This position will see you manage complex bioinformatics projects, in collaboration with life science researchers.

    REQUIREMENTS

    This role requires exceptional skills in all aspects of microarray experimental design and statistical data analysis, including normalisation, differential expression, clustering, classification, and ontology analysis. We would envisage that the demands of Next Generation Sequencing will be a major Bioinformatics challenge in the immediate future. The role will also require you to have the ability to prepare and deliver scientific training and education programs in microarray data analysis for life science researchers. Highly organised and attentive to detail, you will maintain accurate project management records and contribute to scientific manuscripts and presentations.

    This role is suited to an innovative thinker with a strong customer service ethos and good coaching skills. Due to the nature of this role, it is important that you have great written and verbal communication and presentation skills, and a willingness to learn new skills and embrace novel ideas.

    The successful applicant will essentially have:
    • Relevant postgraduate qualifications
    • Solid background in bioinformatics
    • Familiarity with the application of bioinformatics to life science research
    • Strong programming and software development skills in PERL, Python, C++, R, or Java
    • Solid general IT skills and experience
    • Familiarity with Linux/Unix environments
    • Comprehensive experience with common online bioinformatics software and databases such as UniProt, GenBank, BLAST, or Bioconductor

    PREFERENCES

    • Considerable post-qualification work experience in the design and statistical analysis of large, complex microarray data sets
    • Solid experience in project management
    • Staff management or supervision
    • Design and delivery of education and training programs

    SALARY & COMPENSATION

    CENTENARY offers attractive superannuation and salary packaging to staff. Salary will be dependent on qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.

    TERMS

    This position is full-time fixed term, subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period.
