Opportunity: BIOINFORMATICIAN @ TGen--Phoenix, AZ (US)
Submitted by Brady Young; posted on Friday, April 09, 2010

    BACKGROUND

The Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) is a non-profit biomedical research institute based in Phoenix, Arizona, focused on research that can help patients with cancer, neurological disorders, diabetes and other debilitating conditions. Working with a worldwide network of collaborators in the scientific and medical communities, TGen researchers study the genetic components of both common and complex diseases. Through genomic analysis, we learn how DNA, genes and proteins – the microscopic building block of life – can affect human health. Our 41 lead investigators and nearly 300 support personnel at sites in Phoenix, Scottsdale and Flagstaff, Arizona, are dedicated to improving patient care and quality of life through precision medicine, best defined as the right therapy, for the right patient, at the right time.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

The bioinformatician will work on multiple projects analyzing genomics, clinical, and proteomics data by developing custom scripts/software modules in multiple computer languages to parse/process/transform data, applying various bioinformatics tools and analysis programs, generating graphical user interfaces, visualization graphs/plots as required by the project specific data processing requirements.

Understanding various types of biomedical data and applying bioinformatics tools/packages for custom data processing required to support research projects. This includes identifying/installing tools and utilizing various features to support data analysis, develop custom reports summarizing the analysis findings, and present them to research collaborators.

Implement and utilize custom software analysis in multiple computer programming languages on multiple platforms (Linux, Windows, Mac OS) and work closely with researchers to support data generation, transfer, processing, visualization, and project-specific analysis needs.

Build and document reusable software tools and make them available to institute-wide researchers. Support design and implementation of automated workflows for project specific data analysis.

Explore, install, test various software tools and methods on various computing platforms and make them available to the institute-wide research community to support their data analysis activities.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Bachelors Degree with 3 years of experience in Bioinformatics/Computer Science/Bioengineering/Computational Biology or related field. Masters degree with 1+ years experience highly preferred
    • Minimum 2 years experience in academic/industrial research environment in biomedical data analysis
    • Minimum 2 years software development in Perl/C++/C/Python/Java and derivatives for biological data analysis
    • Experience with Linux/UNIX based systems and developing shell scripts for data processing
    • Formal training or acquired experience in computational biology and biological data analysis, such as gene expression, genotyping, sequencing, CGH, phylogeny, proteomics
    • Familiarity with various biological databases for genomics and proteomics
    • Experience with scientific computing tools, such as MATLAB, R and the ability to generate customized graphs/plots and summarizing results
    • Experience in building graphical user interfaces and databases for custom queries
    • Basic understanding of statistics and biological analysis
    • Strong interest in learning new bio-medical data analysis approaches and providing biomedical data processing services to the scientists and their collaborators
    • Excellent communication skills and strong drive to interact with researchers carrying out cutting-edge biomedical research
    • Experience in using software projects using repositories such as CVS/SVN
    • Experience of working in wet-lab
    • Familiarity with HPC
    • Familiarity with proteomics data
