RESPONSIBILITIES
An opportunity is available for a Staff Scientist in the laboratory of Dr. Eric Haura at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute. The Biomedical Informatics Staff Scientist assumes the responsibility of directing and providing day-to-day oversight of both technical support and scientific support for constructing biomedical informatics tools to manage, analyze and interpret data for research projects associated with the Moffitt Lung Cancer Comprehensive Research Center and SPORE. Provide assistance in writing manuscripts, preparing grant proposals and interpreting statistical data.
Duties:
- Managing the daily activities of assigned projects including data analysis, data management, project troubleshooting, scheduling, teaching and training
- Duties specifically relating to analysis include validating the quality of data obtained from individual experiments, assisting with the utilization of publicly available databases to further the goals of research projects
- Using Java, C++, perl, relational database technologies and other web-enabled technologies to construct biomedical informatics tools to manage data arising from microarray, proteomics, genotyping and other scientific methodologies requiring data management and analysis using computer-based technologies
- Assisting members of the Biomedical Informatics Shared Resource Facility to develop of novel methods for managing and analyzing complex biomedical research data
- Applying cluster analysis, latent class models and other statistical techniques to microarray and other biomedical research data in collaboration with members of the Biostatistics Core
- Contributing to identification and solution of unsolved computing problems in biomedical research
- Collaborating with members of the Biostatistics Core and other Researchers to interpret statistical results derived from biology experiments
- Working with technical support personnel and members of Research Computing Services to manage and support Bioinformatics resources including networking, hardware, software and associated licenses
- Providing assistance to research personnel with project design and analysis when required as well as providing technical assistance within the research programs
- Managing the collection, organization, analysis, and documentation of research data
- Maintaining audit quality Core notebooks, logbooks, and computerized usage data that is utilized for CCSG submissions, etc.
REQUIREMENTS
- Must have experience working with biologists and statisticians to develop and apply novel biomedical informatics approaches using tools such as C, C++, PERL, HTML, JAVA, XML, Apache, Visual Basic, database tools and SQL
- Applicants must also have experience with commercial and open-source software applications for DNA, RNA and protein sequence analysis, microarray analysis, SNP analysis and proteomics analysis.
- Successful candidate must be articulate and show evidence of collaborative activity and programming skills.
- The position requires excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Experience working in a team environment is essential.
- Successful applicant must have extensive experience in project planning and be able to lead a team to implement bioinformatics/biomedical informatics solutions in a distributed computing environment.
- Individual must have a Ph.D. in the biological or computer sciences experience or an associated discipline and 2-4 years of experience in bioinformatics support and training using public and commercial bioinformatics software packages.
- Additional Information: Ability to conduct bioinformatics research and analysis using scientific methods and techniques. Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others and communicate clearly verbally and in writing.
