    BACKGROUND

    The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.

    The Wellcome Trust Sanger institute is a world leader in delivering large scale DNA sequencing projects using the latest sequencing technologies. The Vertebrate Resequencing Informatics group will work on the delivery of the genome sequence data, assemblies’ websites and analyses for large vertebrate sequencing projects using cutting-edge techniques and technologies.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The Vertebrate Resequencing Informatics group is seeking to recruit 3 experienced computer biologists to contribute to the delivery of genome sequence data, assemblies’ websites and analyses for large vertebrate sequencing projects using cutting-edge techniques and technologies.

    Next generation sequencing technologies are constantly evolving in terms of the type and volume of sequence data produced and the Vertebrate Resequencing Informatics group will need to design scalable and robust informatics solutions (data tracking, storage, and computing power) and new computational methods and algorithms for the interpretation of new sequencing technology data.

    The successful candidates will develop, maintain and run pipelines and processes for the production QC, and analysis of high-throughput genome data. The ability to effectively communicate to elicit complex requirements from, and convey complex information to, groups with different levels of technical knowledge is essential as well as the competence to produce high-quality scientific data on a large scale while adapting to rapid developments in sequencing hardware and software.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • A M.Sc. or Phd degree in biology or computer science (or equivalent industry experience)
    • Previous significant experience in bioinformatics
    • Some experience manipulating sequence based data
    • Significant evidence of proficiency in computer program design and implementation in a modern programming language (e.g. Perl, Java, C++, Python etc.)
    • A high level of communication skills to be able to elicit complex requirements from, and convey complex information to, groups with different levels of technical knowledge
    • Ability to quickly adapt to new problems and ideas
    • Excellent problem-solving skills

    PREFERENCES

    • Experience with managing large volumes of data
    • Experience with running software on a compute farm or cluster
    • Experience with new sequencing technology data
    • Relational database design and manipulation via SQL
    • Web scripting/development experience

    TERMS

    These positions are offered on a fixed-term basis with an end date of 28 Feb 2013.

    SALARY & COMPENSATION

    Salary range 27,316 to 37,690 GBP per annum dependent on experience.
