    SUMMARY

    Northwestern University currently has an opening available for a Statistical Analyst / Programmer 1 in the Feinberg School of Medicine, Center for Genetic Medicine.

    The bioinformatics analyst will perform basic and advanced analysis on data produced from whole genome association studies, next generation sequencing system and microarray experiments. This position will develop software or use current open source software in conducting data analysis for a next generation sequencing system at basic or advanced level. Partner with the director of the Genomics core facility to design experiments in Whole Genome Association Studies and Next generation sequencing studies.

    The successful candidate must have a background in bioinformatics and biostatistics and must have software development experience, at least to the level of developing scripts for manipulating data in languages such as Python, Perl and R. Experiments with Analyzing SOLiD NGS is a plus.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Developing software or using current open source or third party commercial software to conduct data analysis for next generation sequencing systems from ABI (SOLiD) and other NSGs, Genotyping,CNV and methylation analysis for the Illumina system and microarray analysis at basic and advanced level
    • Along with the director of the Genomics core facility help design experiments in Whole Genome Association, Next generation sequencing and microarray studies. Prepare manuscripts on related data analysis
    • Documentation and good software practice management and mentoring
    • Work with other bioinformaticists as needed.
    • Perform related duties as required or assigned.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • MS in bioinformatics, biostatistics or computer science or related field with appropriate experience in developing software or the equivalent in experience and education
    • Two to three years of experience in programming or informatics
    • Demonstrated ability to learn about new technologies
    • Demonstrated ability in working with commercial software
    • Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to work with individuals and groups
    • Ability to multitask, work and learn independently, and be self-motivated
    • A record of taking the initiative to solve problems and working to high quality standard
    • Familiarity with high-dimensional data mining and machine learning. Background in statistics is preferred
    • Willingness and capability to share knowledge with other members of the team

    PREFERENCES

    • PhD in bioinformatics, biostatistics or computer science or related field with appropriate experience in developing software or the equivalent in experience and education
    • Record on taking initiative to solve problems and working with high standards
    • Outstanding interpersonal skills
    • Familiarity with software versioning tools
    • User support and training experience
    • Experience in working at an academic or health care computing environment
