    BACKGROUND

    The Michael Smith Laboratories at the University of British Columbia invites applications for a tenure track Instructor position starting September 1st, 2010. The successful applicant will have a significant role in the implementation of various science education/communication programs of the Advanced Molecular Biology Laboratory (AMBL; the educational facility of the Michael Smith Laboratories). These programs involve practical laboratory courses in molecular techniques and bioinformatics; high school and elementary school outreach programs aimed at both students and teachers; interdisciplinary projects that aim to bridge the arts and sciences for the undergraduate student audience; teaching duties to support the Faculty of Science curricula at graduate and undergraduate levels, and other science communication activities. The successful candidate must possess skills in the development and delivery of course content in bioinformatics and computational biology as well as previous experience delivering successful science outreach programming.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Develop and deliver bioinformatics training modules targeted at a wide range of educational levels from the high school students to Ph.D. level scientists. Develop, deliver and champion a wide range of programs that promote science awareness in the primary & secondary school communities and to the general public at large. Prepare grant applications and pursue funding sources to support the outreach and educational initiatives of the Michael Smith Laboratories. Support efforts to improve the general expertise of Michael Smith Laboratory and UBC scientists in bioinformatics through the development and delivery of professional workshops. Develop, deliver, and coordinate specific outreach programming offered at the Michael Smith Laboratories, including a wide range of activities to support interdisciplinary collaborations hosted by the AMBL. Actively participate in curricula development projects and teach both graduate and undergraduate credit courses to support the Faculty of Science curriculum at UBC.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Genetics, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or Computational Biology.
    • At least five years of teaching experience in the field of bioinformatics is also required.
