    BACKGROUND

    The Computational Genomics Core, part of the Vanderbilt Center for Human Genetics Research (CHGR), builds and supports software systems to organize and facilitate the work of investigators seeking to understand genetic variation and its impact on human health and medicine. Such systems involve aggregating, organizing, and presenting data from disparate sources in ways that enable investigators to understand and analyze the data. We employ a wide range of technologies in constructing these systems.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Work with investigators, laboratory personnel, and statistical analysts to understand system requirements ahead of and during development, and issues or required changes after development.
    • Implement or modify databases to support required application functionality.
    • Collaborate with teammates to identify suitable solutions.
    • Produce maintainable, reusable source code, focused on both utilizing and creating modules/libraries for reuse in common tasks.

    REQUIREMENTS

    • A minimum of 3 years professional experience in software development
    • A minimum of 2 year professional experience with the Ruby on Rails web application framework
    • A minimum of 2 years professional experience writing database applications
    • Significant experience in a UNIX/Linux development/deployment environment
    • Comfortable in an iterative development environment
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills
    • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks when required
    • Ability to collaborate and interact well within a team environment
    • Ability to rapidly comprehend existing source code to correct bugs when required

    PREFERENCES

    • Bioinformatics experience
    • PHP experience
    • Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL experience
    • C/C++ skills

    TERMS

    This is a full-time position.
